Theroleofolfactionforpredationriskassessmentremainsbarelyexploredinbirds,althoughpredatorchemicalcuescouldbeusefulinpredatordetectionunderlowvisibilityconditionsformanybirdspecies.WeexaminewhetherGreatTitsParusmajorareabletousetheodourofmustelidstoassesspredationriskwhenselectingcavitiesforroosting.Weanalysedwhethertheresponsetopredatorchemicalcuesisinnateandassessedwhethertheantipredatoryresponseisassociatedwithexploratorybehaviour,aproxyforthepersonalityofbirds.Inachoiceexperimentinaviaries,weofferednaïveadultGreatTitsofknownpersonalitytwonest-boxes,onecontrolandoneexperimental.Theexperimentalnest-boxhadtheodourofamustelidpredatororastrongnewodourwithoutbiologicalsignificance,thecontrolnest-boxcontainednoodour.Whenoneofthecavitiescontainedtheodourofapredator,birdsavoidedtheuseofeitherofthetwoofferednest-boxes,whereastherewasnoavoidanceofboxeswhenoneofthenest-boxescontainedacontrolodour.Therewasnorelationshipwithexploratorybehaviour.Weshowthattheabilitytousethechemicalcuesofpredatorsisinnateinbirds,butindividualdifferencesintheresponsetopredatorchemicalcuescannotbeexplainedbythepersonalityofthebird.
