【 摘 要 】

Adultbirdsusuallydisplaybrighterplumagecolorationthanyoungerindividuals.Thisdifferencemaybeeitherduetoselectionagainstlesscolouredyearlingsortoanincreaseincolorationaftertheirfirstcompletemoult.Inthisstudy,weexaminedage-relateddifferencesincarotenoid-basedyellowventralcolorationofGreatTitsParusmajor.Cross-sectionalanalysesatthepopulationlevelshowedthatoldermalesareingeneralgreenerandmoresaturatedincolourthanyearlingindividuals.Longitudinalanalysesusingbirdscapturedinsubsequentseasonsconfirmedwithin-individualchangesincolorationwithage.Suchincreaseincolorationmightbetheresultofthedevelopmentofbetterforagingskillswithage-andhence,theindividualabilitytoobtainenoughcarotenoid-richsourcesatthetimeofmoult-,orconsequenceofotherfactorsindirectlyassociatedwithage.However,wecannotruleoutthepossibilitythatotherfactors(suchasdirectionalselectionagainstlesscolouredindividuals)operateadditionallyatthepopulationlevel.
