Inordertoexamine24-hourcolonyattendancepatternsbymatedForster'sTernsSternaforsteriinSouthSanFranciscoBay,California,duringincubationandchick-rearingstages,weradio-marked10individualsconsistingoffivepairsandrecordedcolonyattendanceusinganautomateddata-loggingreceiversystem.Wecalculatedandanalyzedfivevariables:thetotalattendancetimebypairsandindividuals,thedurationofindividualattendancebouts,andthedurationbothmembersofapaireitheroverlappedincolonyattendanceorwerebothabsentfromthecolony.Thepercentageoftimespentonthecolonybyatleastoneindividualofapairwashighestduringincubationanddeclinedduringchickrearing.Overall,maleternsspentagreaterproportionoftimediurnallyattendingthecolonythanfemales.Femalesspentagreaterproportionoftimeoncolonyatnight,andwithoutthesenocturnalrecords,wewouldhavereportedoverallfemalecolonyattendanceratesasbeingmuchlower.Despitesex-specificdifferencesinattendancerates,thelengthofattendanceboutsdidnotdifferbetweenthesexes.Simultaneouscolonyattendancebybothmembersofapairwashighatnight,butduringtheday,pairsinfrequentlyoverlappedintheircolonyattendanceandbothmemberswerefrequentlyabsent.Ourdataloggingsystemfunctionedwell,andourdataillustratestheimportanceofcollecting24-hourrecordswhenconsideringattendancerates.
