Understandingthefactorsdrivingdeparturedecisionsfromstopoversitesiscriticalwhenpredictingthedynamicsofbirdmigration.WeInvestigatedtheInteractiveeffectsofwind,tidalcharacteristics,andprecipitationonthedeparturedecisionsoftheEurasianSpoonbillPlataleal.leucorodiafromamajorcoastalstopoverlocalityinnorthernIberia.MostdepartingSpoonbills(gt;80%)crossedanadjacentmountainrangetofollowadirectrouteoverInlandIberia,whiletheremaindermadeadetourfollowinganIndirectcoastalroutealongthecoastoftheIberianPeninsula.Duringfourconsecutiveautumns,wedailymonitoreddepartingSpoonbillsleavingalongthesetworoutes.ThebirdstakingtheInlandroute,crossingunsuitablehabitatsandneedingthereforehigherfuel-loads,departedpreferentiallyunderfavourabletailwindconditions(TWC).Thisrepresentedasignificantincreaseindistancecoveredand/oradecreaseinenergyspentperunittime.Moreover,Spoonbillstakingtheinlandrouteoftendepartedduringspringtides.Fortheindirectcoastalroute,TWCdidnotaffecttheonsetofmigrationbutbirddeparturesincreasedwithneaptides.Precipitationanddatewerenegativelycorrelatedwithdeparturestowardsbothroutes,whereasSpoonbilldensityatthestopoverhadapositiveeffect.OurfindingsprovideempiricalsupportfortherolethatwindassistancemayplayforSpoonbillstoresumemigration.
