MaleBarnOwlsTytoalbadeliveredsignificantlymoremalethanfemaleFieldVolesMicrotusagrestistotheirmatesandnestlingsinspring.Themalebiaswasevidentbothinthepreystoredatthenestandintheskeletalremainsofpreyinpelletstakenfromthenest.Thesexratioinvolescaughtbytrappingshowedaslightfemalebias.Analysisofpelletsproducedbythemalebarnowlsattheirroostsatthesametime,showedthesamebiasedsexratioofvoles,demonstratingthatselectionofmalevolesoccurredatcaptureandwasnotaresultofdifferencesbetweenpreydeliveredtothenestandthoseconsumedbythemales.Themeanweightsoftrappedmaleandfemalevolesinspringwere23.4g(SE0.5)and18.5g(SE0.4)respectively.Duringwinterwhenvoleswerenotbreedingthesexratioinpelletsofmaleandfemaleowlswasclosetounity.Thissuggeststhattheincreasedaggressivenessand/oractivitylevelsofmalevolesassociatedwithterritorialbehaviourandbreedinginspringledtoanincreaseintheirdetectionratebyowlshuntingbyuseofauditorycues.Thustheselectionformalevoleswastheresultofanincreasedencounterrateratherthanoptimalforagingbasedonthegreaterbodymassofmalevoles.InspringtheowlscaughtsignificantlymoreFieldVolesthanWoodMiceApodemussylvaticusthanpredictedfromtherelativeabundancesofthetwospeciesinthefield.ItissuggestedthiswastheresultofthegreaterabilityofWoodMicetodetecttheowlsandtheirgreateragilityinevadingcapture.
