SnowyOwlBuboscandiacusnestmoundsfromBarrow,Alaska,werecharacterizedmeasuringseveralvariablesfrom114nestsand2280randommounds.Moundheightappearedtobethemostimportanttrait,asnestmoundsaveragedabout1mtall,andweresignificantlydifferentfromrandommoundsinallyears.Generallycircularnestbowls(n=91)weredugbyfemalesandaveraged47.5×44.0×9.6cm(length×width×depth).MoundvegetationdidnotconcealIncubatingorbroodingSnowyOwls.Tallnestmoundswereadvantageousinthattheyweredrier(thinnersnowcoverwhichmeltedearlierallowingfemalestodignestbowls),windier(relieffrommosquitoesandcoolerinsummer)andallowednestingowlsgreatervigilanceagainstpredators.
