HabitatselectionoftheEurasianScopsOwlOtusscopswasstudiedinLjubljanskobarje(centralSlovenia,180km2)whereabioticconditions,especiallyclimate,couldbeconsideredsuboptimalforthisxerothermophilicspecies.DataonthenumberanddistributionofcallingmalesweregatheredinMayandJune2004–06usingtheplaybackmethod.Atotalof137callingmaleswerecounted(29in2004,66in2005,42in2006).Toavoidpseudo-replication,72non-overlappingsiteswereselectedforhabitatanalysis.Habitatwithin250-mradiusplotssurroundingowlsiteswascomparedwith136unoccupiedandnon-overlappingsites.Withinplots,14habitatvariablesweremeasured.Discriminatingvariablesbetweenoccupiedandnon-occupiedsiteswereidentifiedwithstepwiselogisticregression.ScopsOwloccupationwaspositivelyassociatedwiththenumberoftreelines,andslightlynegativewiththesurfaceareaofwoodlandandsettlements.ScopsOwlspreferredsiteswithahigherthanaverageproportionoftraditionalorchards,treelines,scrub,unimprovedmeadows,andtreeplantations.Treeplantationswereonlyusedbyowlsduring2005,whenthenumberofcallingmaleswashighest.Allmaleswereunpaired,perhapsindicatinginexperiencedorlate-arrivingmalesoutcompetedtomarginalhabitat.ConservationactionsneededtomaintainthispopulationofScopsOwlatthenorthernborderofitsbreedingrangeinclude:(1)preserveandrejuvenatetraditionalorchardsandisolatedtreesinfarmyards,(2)encouragerenovationofoldhousesandtheirfarmyardsanddiscouragehighdensityhousing,(3)protectandrestoretreelinesandcopses,(4)enlargetheproportionofunimprovedmeadows,and(5)limittheincreaseofcroplandandtheuseofbiocides.
