Weather Conditions and Moon Phase Influence on Tropical Screech Owl and Burrowing Owl Detection by Playback in Southeast Brazil

Samplingowlsinareliableandstandardizedwayisnoteasygiventheirnocturnalhabits.Playbackisawidelyemployedtechniquetosurveyowls.Weassessedtheinfluenceofwindspeed,temperature,airhumidity,andmoonphaseontheresponserateoftheTropicalScreechOwlMegascopscholibaandtheBurrowingOwlAthenecuniculariainsoutheastBrazil.TropicalScreechOwloccursinscrublandandwoodedhabitats,whereastheBurrowingOwlinhabitsopengrasslandstograsslandsavannah.Sixteensurveypointsweresystematicallydistributedinfourdifferentlandscapetypes,rangingfromopengrasslandtowoodlandsavannah.Fieldworkwasconductedin2004fromJunetoDecember,thereproductiveseasonofthetwoowlspecies.Ourstudydesignconsistedofeightfieldexpeditionsoffivenightseach;fourexpeditionsoccurredunderfullmoonandfourundernewmoonconditions.Ateachsurveystation,weperformedabroadcast/listeningsequenceinvolvingseveralcallsandvocalizationsfromeachspecies,startingwithTropicalScreechOwl(thesmallerspecies).From112sampleperiodsforeachspecieswithintheirrespectivepreferredhabitats,weobtained54responsesfromTropicalScreechOwl(48%responserate)and30responses(27%responserate)fromBurrowingOwl.WefoundthattheresponserateofTropicalScreechOwlincreasedunderconditionsofhighertemperatureandairhumidity,whiletheresponserateofBurrowingOwlwashigherduringfullmoonnights.
