Westudiedcollisionrateofbirdswithmodern,large1.65MWwindturbinesinthreewindfarmsinTheNetherlandsduringthreemonthsinautumnandwinter.Collisionrate,aftercorrectionforretrievalanddisappearancerate,was0.08birdsperturbineperdayonaverage(range0.05–0.19).Collisionrisk,i.e.thenumberofvictimsrelativetotheflightintensityofbirdsatthewindfarms,was0.14%onaverage.Fornocturnalmigrants,riskwasaslowas0.01%,whiletheriskwas0.16%forlocalbirdsflyingatnight.Inabsolutenumbers,theoverallcollisionriskwassimilartothe0.06–0.28%foundforearlier-generationlowerturbinesthathaveasmallerrotorsurface.However,giventhecomparativelylargerotorsurfaceandaltituderangeofthemodernturbines,theriskwasc.threefoldlowerthanforsmallerturbines.Alargefractionofcollisionvictimswerediurnallyactiveandlocalbirdsthatwereforaginginthearea,ratherthannocturnalmigrants.Flightintensitiesofthisgroupshouldbetakenintoaccountaswellasthatofnocturnalmigrants,whencalculatingcollisionrate.
