WeanalysedsatellitetrackingdatatorevealthedailytravelschedulesofHobblesFalcosubbuteomigratingbetweennorthernEuropeandsouthernAfrica.Bycomparingmovementsduringshort-timeintervalsof1–8hatdifferenttimesofthedaybetweenthethreedifferentregionsEurope,SaharaDesertandtropicalAfrica,wefoundsignificanthigherhourlyspeedsintheSaharacomparedtotheothertworegions.Themigrationstartedearlyinthemorningandcontinuedthroughouttheday,resultingindailytraveltimeexceedingthatoftypicalthermalsoaringmigrants.DuetofasthourlyspeedsincombinationwiththelongtraveldaysduringSaharacrossings,theHobbiesexceededdailytraveldistancesrecordedforsoaringmigrants.InEuropeandtropicalAfrica,thespeedwashighlyvariableduringtheday,andlowerflightspeeds,especiallyduringafternoons,suggestafly-and-foragestrategy.Ourpredictionsaboutregularoccurrenceofnocturnalflightespeciallyacrossgeographicalbarriersasthedesertwerenotfulfilled.IntheSahara,theHobbiesrestrictedtheirmovementtodiurnalmigration.Nevertheless,10%oftheflightsegmentsintropicalAfricawerepartlyorcompletelyduringnighthoursandHobbiesoftenstartedtheirdailyflightbeforeoratsunrise.WeattributethespecialcharacteristicsofthedailytravelschedulesofHobbiesprimarilytotheiruseofafly-and-foragestrategy,possiblyincombinationwithpreparednessforexploitingthermalsduringthedailythermaltimewindow.FurtherstudiesareneededtounderstandwhyHobbiesdonotincreasedailytravellinghourstoincluderegularnocturnalflightintheSaharaDesert.WesuggestthatthedailytravelschedulesoftheHobby,whichweredistinctlydifferentfromthoseofotherdiurnalmigrantslikelargeraptors(whichmainlyexploitthermalsoaringmigration)orpipits,wagtails,finchesandpigeons(whichmainlytravelduringthemorninghours)maybetypicalforbirdspeciesthatprimarilyuseafly-and-foragemigrationstrategy.
