ToexploremigrationpatternsofLesserBlack-backedGullsLarusfuscusbreedinginnorthernNorway,thisstudypresentsresightingsof16adultand83juvenilebirdsmarkedinthisregion.Adultsoftheendangerednominatesub-speciesL.f.fuscushadalowprobabilityofbeingobserved(only3.5%ofmarkedbirdswereobserved),probablybecausetheadultswinterinareaswithfewobservers,suchaseasternandcentralAfrica.Incontrast,birdsofthegreyish-mantledsubspeciesL.f.intermediusorL.f.graellsiihadahighprobabilityofbeingobserved(45.5%).Adultsofintermedius/graellsiihadawesternmigrationrouteandwinteredmainlyinwesternEuropeandnorthwestAfrica,Adultsexhibitedahighsitefidelitytowinteringareas.Birdsmarkedasjuvenileshadtwodifferentmigrationroutes.(1)30%oftheobservedbirdscrossedtheScandinavianPeninsulatoFinlandandtheBalticcountries,andthenmigratedtotheeasternMediterranean(IsraelandEgypt)downtoeasternandcentralAfrica(KenyaandCameroon).(2)Theother70%followedtheEuropeancoastandoverwinteredinUK,theIberianPeninsula,Morocco,MauritaniaandSenegal.Therewerenoindicationsthatjuvenilemigrationpatternsdifferedamongsubspeciesasjuvenilesfrommixedandpurefuscuscoloniesexhibitedsimilarpatterns.Theapparentdifferencesinmigrationpatternsbetweenadultandjuvenilefuscusmaybearesultofjuvenileexploratorymigration.
