Aspartofastudyonthecorebodytemperature(Tb)ofdesertbirds,wepurposedtousetemperature-sensitiveimplantableradiotransmitters.Becauseofthedifficultyinrecapturingthesebirds,weneededtoknowiftheseelectronicdevicesheldtheircalibrationoverthedurationofnormalbatterylife(21days).Ourinitialcalibrationat40°Cwasconsistentlylessthanthatofthemanufacturer,althoughinsomecasesdifferencesweresmall:deviationsintemperatureaspredictedbythecompany'scalibrationandourownrangedfrom0.1to1.7°C,Wetestedfordriftincalibrationandfoundthatforthefirst9daysofoperation,mostradiotransmittersdeviatedbylessthan0.5°Cfromtheinitialcalibration.Differencesbetweenpredictedandactualtemperaturebecameprogressivelylargerwithtime,sometimesexceeding2.0°C.Ifpossible,wesuggestthattransmittersbecalibrated,implanted,andthenaftertakingdataonTbofthefree-livingbird,thetransmittersshouldberecoveredandrecalibrated.Ifitisnotpossibletorecapturebirds,thenourdatasuggestthatTbpredictedbypulseperiodsarereasonableupto9–12daysaftertheinitialcalibrationbutdatarecordedbeyondthistimeperiodarepotentiallysuspect.
