Knowledgeofdietandintakeratesareusefulfirststepsinunderstandingthedistributionandbehaviourofforagers.ThedietofGoldenPloversandLapwingsfeedingonarablefarmlandhasbeenrarelystudied,yetthesespeciesincreasinglyoccupythishabitatinwinter.Theyareknowntofeedatnightbutlittleisknownabouttheirdietandforagingsuccessatnight.Thisstudyaimedtodescribeandcomparediurnalandnocturnalforagingbehaviourinordertoexplainspatialandtemporalpatternsinforaging.Overthreewinters(1999/2000–2001/02)diurnalandnocturnalobservationsoffocalindividualsandcollectionoffaecalsampleswereusedtoreconstructdietandquantifyintakeratesacrossarangeofarablehabitats.Numerically,arthropods(mostlyCarabidsandmillipedes)werethemaindiurnalpreytypesbutbybiomass,smallearthwormswerethemajorpreyitems.Diurnalintakerateswerelowbutcomparablewithotherstudiesofthesespecies,promptingquestionsconcerningtheprofitabilityoffeedingonagriculturalfarmlandandthepause-travelforagingmode.Nocturnalintakerateswereupto50%higherduetoagreaterrelianceoncatchinglargeearthwormsatnight.Diurnalintakerateswerehighestduringmildweatherandongrassandsugarbeetstubblefields;theywerelowestoncerealcrops,yetthiswasthehabitatmostconsistentlyoccupied.Currentmethodsforassessingearthwormabundancelimitfurtherexplanationofforagingbehaviour.
