Geotechnicalinvestigationisrequiredforthedeterminationofgroundparametersforsafeandeconomicdesignofcivilengineeringstructures.Compressionindexisoneofthesoilparametersthatarerequiredforcalculationoffoundationsettlements,however,thedeterminationofcompressionindexisexpensive,cumbersome,timeconsumingandrequiredalotofexperienceforobtainingundisturbedsoilsamplesfromthefield.Inordertomitigatethesecomplexities,equationshavebeendevelopedbymanyresearchersinthepasttopredictcompressionindexusingindexpropertiesofsoilwhicharerelativelyeasiertoconductinthelaboratory.LinearregressionanalysiswasusedtoestablishedempiricalmodelsrelatingcompressionindexandindexpropertiesofsixtyweatheredBirimianphyllitessamplesintheKumasiarea.Basedontheanalysis,theliquidlimitresultedinthemodelwiththehighestcoefficientofdeterminationcomparedtothemoisturecontent,plasticityindex,andplasticlimit.Theresultingmodelwasusedtopredictthecompressionindexofaboutthirtysamplesthatwerenotusedintheregressionanalysis;theresultsshowedthat,themodelisabletopredictthecompressionindexwithlesserror.Theempiricalmodel(Cc=0.004LL–0.03)involvingtheliquidlimitisrecommendedforpredictionofcompressionindexforpreliminarydesignandverificationofthelaboratorytestssoilsinKumasiwithintheBirimianphyllites.
