【 摘 要 】

Moisturecontentisoneofthemostimportantfactorsandapowerfulmechanismmanipulatingtheengineeringpropertiesofrockonitsphysicalandmechanicalproperties.Thisissuebecomesmoresignificantinshaleasitpossessesfinelaminationstructureswhichtendtosplitunevenly,paralleltotheweaknessplane.Itbecomesmoreseverewhentherockmaterialissubjectedtohigherweatheringprocess.Thispaperaimstoinvestigatetheeffectofmoistureonthestrength,andanisotropyindex,Ia(50)offreshtohighlyweatheredshalecollectedatAyerHitam,Johor,Malaysia.Atotalof96samplesrepresentingvariousweatheringgradesweretestedforthispurpose.Thesamplesweretestedatvaryingmoisturebyimmersingtheminwateratdifferentdurationoftime.Theresultsrevealedthatthereisasignificantrelationshipamongweatheringgrades,moistureabsorption,strengthandanisotropyindexofshale.Themoistureabsorptionisdependentontheclaymineralspresentintherockmaterialwhichindirectlyaffectsthestrength.However,theresultshowsauniquepatternontherangeofanisotropyindexforvariousweatheringgrades.Shalewithhighermoisturecontentandweatheringgradeexhibitshigherrangeofanisotropyindex.
