【 摘 要 】

Claysoilsandtheirrelatedabnormalbehaviorsuchasexcessiveshrinkage,swelling,consolidationsettlementandcrackingondryinghasbeenthesubjectofmanyinvestigations.Inrecentyears,anincreasingneedisbeingfeltforvarioustypesofconstructionsinmarginal,loworreclaimedlandsandcoastalareaswhicharenotsuitablenormallyforconstructionpurposes.Clays,wellknownforitshighcompressibilityandpoorshearstrength,posenumerousproblemstobuilders.Previousstudiesmainlyevaluatedtheeffectsofadditivessuchaslime,cementandsandonthesecharacteristicsofclays.Initialresultsindicatedthatthesoilcharacteristicswereimproved.However,reportedlyinmanycases,theseadditivesresultedinadecreaseinplasticityandincreaseinhydraulicconductivity.Asaresult,therehasbeenagrowinginterestinsoil/fiberreinforcement.Thepresentinvestigationhasfocusedontheimpactofshortrandomfiberinclusiononconsolidationsettlementincompactedclays.Toexaminethepossibleimprovementsintheconsolidationcharacteristics,localclayeysoilwasreinforcedwithrandomdistributionofpolypropylene(synthetic)andcoir(natural)fibersaspercentage(0-1%atanincrementof0.2%)ofdryweightofsoilwith10,15and20mmlengths.Resultsindicatedthatthecompressionindexandcoefficientofvolumechangedecreasewithinclusionofpolypropylene/coirfibersinthesoiluptocertainfibercontentandincreasethereafter.Thecoefficientofconsolidationincreaseswithincreaseinfibercontentandfiberlengthintherangeoffibersconsideredintheinvestigation.Thus,thetimerequiredtoachieveprimaryconsolidationdecreasesforfiber-reinforcedsoilforagivendegreeofconsolidationandagivendrainagepath.
