【 摘 要 】
The paper argues that, within contemporaneous empirical sociology based on large-scale quantitative surveys, the analysis of variability and inequality is both embedded and revealed in the framework of a statistical model. This argument is illustrated with the presentation of three important examples in the empirical literature on social stratification: the use of path analysis for the development of the status attainment model in the 1960s and 1970s American sociology; the use of the multilevel model for the analysis of contextual and neighborhood effects on individual outcomes in the 1990s social science research; the use of the log-linear and log-multiplicative models for contingency tables to discover and analyze historical trends in inequality of educational opportunity within a country.
