【 摘 要 】
In the past fifteen years, Yemen’s Soqotra Archipelago has been targeted by both international development and Islamic reformist projects instrumental in, among other things, governing gender roles and relationships within its largest and most populated island, Soqotra. Based on fieldwork carried out intermittently from 2004–2011 in one of Soqotra’s fledgling protected areas, this paper examines the impact of integrated conservation and development programs on men and women’s everyday roles, practices, and social experiences in a pastoral setting. Specifically, it focuses on the aims and failures of interventions targeting rural women and demonstrates how these have led, paradoxically, to the attenuation of women’s “empowerment” on the ground. Additionally, it analyses the surprising intersections and negotiations between these state‑ and internationally‑driven development interventions and transnational pietist influences in the same locale to show how women’s choices, networks and possibilities are being simultaneously expanded and constrained in the context of these recent socioeconomic and geospatial transformations.
