【 摘 要 】

As is the case all over the Arab World, contemporary Yemeni political autobiographies have been booming ever since the 80`s, and can be used as a source for material which no historian should overlook. Part of a broader study on how the Ottoman presence (1872-1918) was perceived, both before and after pulling out of Yemen, this article however shows how "cumbersome" this part of Yemen`s history can be in the minds of the players in the 1962 "republican" revolution. The creed of independence achieved and pitted against Turkish wrongdoings, a theme the contemporary imamate skilfully managed to associate with Arab nationalist ideology, which the revolutionaries claimed to belong to, has definitely created an insurmountable paradox. The odd nine authors of autobiographies included in this article, all of them former revolutionaries, do seem to be suffering from some peculiar form of amnesia when recounting the course of their lives as well as of their fathers`, reducing Ottoman presence to a mere element in the historical backdrop. This article therefore takes a look at what the authors "leave out" and forget, and explores the mechanisms at work in autobiographical narratives, pointing to clues to a different story from in between the lines, when the coherence of family history and private experience are not at stake: memory collides with History as the Ottoman model has allowed Yemen to imagine a different future for itself.
