【 摘 要 】
Significant atrial septal defects (ASD) are closed, surgicallyor through a transcatheter device, in order to avoid pulmonaryhypertension in late life. A patent foramen ovale (PFO) mayneed to be closed because of transient shunt reversal resultingin transient ischaemic events or stroke. We report the Malteseexperience to date in transcatheter closure of these defects. Atotal of 46 ASDs and 51 PFOs have been successfully closed atour unit (total 97), with very low complication rates, rates thatcompare very favourably with results from larger internationalcentres.
