【 摘 要 】

To evaluate the impact of soil management systems (SMS) on the soil quality, some physical and chemical variables were characterized in farms of onion, bermudagrass, avocado, sweet pepper, fallow and forest, and related to the soil biological behavior. The study was carried out on the Chaimare soil series, in Jimenez Municipality, Lara State. Soil samples at two depths (0-10 and 10-20 cm) were collected, and the physical (bulk density, porosity and hydraulic conductivity), chemical (pH, electrical conductivity, organic matter, phosphorus and potassium) and biological (basal respiration and microbial biomass) variables were evaluated. The highest basal respiration and microbial biomass were found on soils whose management included organic amendments or when the soils were under no cultivation or fallow. The lowest values were found under conventional tilling (agri-machinery passes and chemical fertilizer applications). Microbial biomass was correlated with the hydraulic conductivity and macropores, which demonstrates that the improvement in the physical soil condition, resulted in a higher biological activity of the microorganisms.
