【 摘 要 】
ABSTRACT: Passive acoustic and digital video recordingswere used to investigate sonic activity and behaviorof red grouper Epinephelus morio on the WestFlorida Shelf. Red grouper were found to produce aunique series of low-frequency (180 Hz peak) pulsesconsisting of 1 to 4 brief (0.15 s) broadband pulses anda 0.5 to 2 s growl (short call); occasionally these werefollowed by a rapid series of 10 to 50 broadband pulses(pulse train). Sound production was ob served throughoutthe day and night, but most sounds occurredbetween sunrise and sunset, with a noticeable increaseduring late afternoon. Behaviors asso ciated with soundproduction included solitary male activity and court -ship interactions, indicating that sound production islikely related to spawning activity. Thus, passiveacoustics could be an effective tool in monitoring redgrouper reproduction and defining critical habitat of akeystone species.【 授权许可】
