【 摘 要 】

The Sociedad Vitícola Uruguaya (SVU) was founded in March 1887. This was part of the project of modernization and diversification of the Uruguayan agriculture driven by the Asociación Rural del Uruguay (ARU), a corporation similar to the Sociedad Rural Argentina. This paper analyzes the origins of the SVU, only entity of its kind in South America, under the Uruguayan agricultural development in the late nineteenth century. The labor conditions, the labor division and the organizational structure in the origins of the SVU are also studied. The hypothesis that guides this work is that the project not only aimed to the development of the wine industry, but also to serve as a sociocultural model in order to motorize capitalist social relations in agriculture and settle the "gaucho" in the rural setting.
