【 摘 要 】

The author presents his interpretation of the recent history of epidemiology in Brazil as well as the role of epidemiology and epidemiologists in the development of the National Health System (SUS). The advances of both academic epidemiology and epidemiology applied to health services in our country are notorious, and several signs of these improvements are presented. A landmark in this historical process was the 1st. National Meeting on Teaching and Research in Epidemiology held in 1984. At this meeting the foundations of the academic development of Brazilian epidemiology were settled, as was the engagement of Brazilian epidemiologists in the struggle for changes in the national health system. After approximately three decades, it is possible to say that, at the international level, there is in Brazil an epidemiology deeply engaged with its development as a subject—as any subject pursuing scientific maturity should be. At the same time, it is engaged with reality, from where it seeks to extract the elements that contribute to lessen the health problems that affect brazilian society.
