Thispaperreportstheresultsofenvironmentalsurveillanceofyeastsinspecificareasoftwotertiarylocalhospitals.FromMarch2007toFebruary2008,samplesfromtheairoftwopublichospitalswerecollectedonamonthlybasis.Thesampleswerecollectedthroughpassivesedimentationmethod(dayandnightexposure)ofPetridishes.Atotalof240airsamplesfrom10hospitalenvironmentswereanalyzed.Theseenvironmentspresentedsimilarcontaminationlevels,fromwhich80fungiisolateswereisolated: Candidaparapsilosis (n=34), Rhodotorulaspp.(19), Trichosporonasahii (11), C.tropicalis (8), C.albicans (4), C.glabrata (1), C.guilliermondii (1), C.krusei (1)and Saccharomycesspp.(1).Regardingthepresenceofyeastsandclimaticconditions,therewere40strains(50%)insemi-criticalareas(naturalventilation)andcriticalareas(airconditioned).Consideringthepresenceofmicroorganismswithpathogenicpotential,environmentalmonitoringisnecessarytopreventpossiblehospitalinfections.
