【 摘 要 】
Flooding, which is now a yearly occurrencein most parts of the World, can be minimized ifreservoirs are constructed at suitable locations to storerain accumulated water for the purpose of irrigationor electric power generation. In that light, we haveestimated the amount of electric energy that can begenerated using rain accumulated water from Abohand Ahiazu Mbaise in Imo State, Nigeria to drive ahydro turbine in the Federal University ofTechnology, Owerri, Nigeria. This was done using therainfall data of Mbaise, accessed fromwww.worldweatheronline.com; the land area of Abohand Ahiazu Mbaise, measured with the help of Googlemap; and the average altitude difference of FUTO andthe reservoir site at Aboh Mbaise, determined with thehelp of Google topographic map. It was estimated thata total of 9.7 GWh of electricity can be generated peryear if 100% of rainwater from Aboh and AhiazuMbaise is accumulated and used to drive a hydroturbine in FUTO. This is equivalent to 406 days of 10MW of electric power. If 30% of the rainwater isaccumulated instead, a total of 2.9 GWh of electricitycan be generated per year, which is equivalent to 122days of 10 MW of electric power.
