iNKTcells,asmallsubsetofαβTCR+Tcells,arecapableofproducinglargeamountsofcytokinesuponactivationthroughtheirTCR.UnlikeconventionalTcellsthatexpresshighlydiverseTCRs,iNKTcellsexpressaglycolipid‐reactiveinvariantTCR‐αchainpairedwithalimitednumberofβchain(s).ThesecellsrecognizeglycolipidantigenswhenpresentedonCD1dmoleculesfoundonAPCorothercells.AlthoughtheimmunoregulatoryrolesofiNKTcellsinthecontextofautoimmunediseasearefairlywellcharacterized,severallinesofevidencehighlighttheimportanceofthiscelltypeinimmuneresponsesagainstmicrobialinsultscausedbybacterial,viral,andparasiticpathogens.RecentstudiesthathaveinvestigatedtheroleofiNKTcellsinimmuneresponsesagainstinfluenzavirushavesuggestedanimportantroleforthesecellsininnatedefensemechanismsaswellasantibody‐andcell‐mediatedresponses.ThisreviewhighlightstheimportantcontributionsofiNKTcellstoimmuneresponsesagainstviralpathogenswithparticularemphasisonimmunitytoinfluenzainfections...
