Candidaalbicans,themostcommonlyisolatedhumanfungalpathogen,isabletogrowasbuddingyeastsorfilamentousforms,suchashyphae.TheabilitytoswitchmorphologyhasbeenattributedacrucialroleforthepathogenesisofC.albicans.Tomimicdisseminatedcandidiasisinhumans,themouseisthemostwidelyusedmodelorganism.Neutrophilsareessentialimmunecellstopreventopportunisticmycoses.Toexplorepotentialdifferencesbetweentherodentinfectionmodelandthehumanhost,wecomparedtheinteractionsofC.albicanswithneutrophilgranulocytesfrommiceandhumans.WerevealedthatmurineneutrophilsexhibitedasignificantlylowerabilitytokillC.albicansthantheirhumancounterparts.Strikingly,C.albicansyeastcellsformedgermtubesuponinternalizationbymurineneutrophils,eventuallyrupturingtheneutrophilmembraneandthereby,killingthephagocyte.Onthecontrary,growthandsubsequentescapeofC.albicansareblockedinsidehumanneutrophils.Accordingtoourfindings,thisblockageinhumanneutrophilsmightbearesultofhigherlevelsofMPOactivityandthepresenceofα‐defensins.Wethereforeoutlinedifferencesinantifungalimmunedefensebetweenhumansandmousestrains,whichfacilitatesamoreaccurateinterpretationofinvivoresults...
