Ebolaviruses(EBOVs)andMarburgviruses(MARVs)areamongthedeadliesthumanviruses,ashighlightedbytherecentandwidespreadEbolavirusoutbreakinWestAfrica,whichwasthelargestandlongestepidemicofEbolavirusdisease(EVD)inhistory,resultinginsignificantlossoflifeanddisruptionsacrossmultiplecontinents.Althoughthenumberofcaseshasnearlyreacheditsnadir,arecentclusterof5casesinGuineaonMarch17,2016,hasextendedtheenhancedsurveillanceperiodtoJune15,2016.New,enhanced90‐dsurveillancewindowsreplacedthe42‐dsurveillancewindowtoensuretherapiddetectionofnewcasesthatmayarisefromamissedtransmissionchain,reintroductionfromananimalreservoir,ormoreimportant,reemergenceofthevirusthathaspersistedinanEVDsurvivor.Inthisreview,wesummarizeourcurrentunderstandingofEBOVpathogenesis,describevaccineandtherapeuticcandidatesinclinicaltrials,anddiscussmechanismsofviralpersistenceandlong‐termhealthsequelaeforEVDsurvivors...
