MPfromtheRESareresponsiblefortheclearanceofsenescentRBC.AlthoughthefrequencyofsenescentRBCislowundersteady‐stateconditions,itincreasesdramaticallyduringhemolyticdisorders,resultinginenhancederythrophagocytosis.AserythrophagocytosishasbeeninvolvedinMPdysfunctionandascertainhemolyticdisordersassociatetoMPapoptosis,apossiblelinkbetweenerythrophagocytosisandtheviabilityofphagocyteswasinvestigatedherein.Tomimichemolyticdisorders,twodistinctinvitromodels,artificiallyoxidizedRBCandDSRBC,werechosentostudytheerythrophagocytosisimpactontheviabilityofJ774A.1MP.AlthoughCRBCwereweaklyphagocytosedanddidnotaffectMPviabilitysignificantly,erythrophagocytosisofoxidizedRBCandDSRBCwasrobustandresultedinasharpdecreaseofMPviabilityviaapoptosis.Undertheseconditions,Hb‐derivedHEwasshowntobeinvolvedintheinductionofapoptosis.Moreover,oxidizedRBC,DSRBC,andHEgeneratedROSspecies,whichwereresponsiblefortheapoptosisofMP.Furthermore,HO‐1,stronglyinducedinresponsetotreatmentwithoxidizedRBC,DSRBC,orHE,wasshowntoprotectMPpartiallyagainstapoptosis,suggestingthatrobusterythro‐phagocytosismayexceedthedetoxificationcapabilitiesofMP.Takentogether,theseresultssuggestthatenhancederythrophagocytosisassociatedtohemolyticdisordersleadstoMPapoptosisinvitroandmayhavecriticalimplicationsforthecontrolofmalariainfectionandfortheexacerbatedsusceptibilitytobacterialinfectionsduringhemolyticdisorders...
