MΦaremultipurposephagocyteswithalargerepertoireofwell‐characterizedabilitiesandfunctions,includingregulationofinflammation,woundhealing,maintenanceoftissuehomeostasis,aswellasservingasanintegralcomponentoftheinnate‐immunedefenseagainstmicrobialpathogens.Workingalongwithneutrophilsanddendriticcells,theothermyeloid‐derivedprofessionalphagocytes,MΦareoneofthekeyeffectorcellsinitiatinganddirectingthehostreactiontopathogenicorganismsandresolvingsubsequentresponsesoncethethreathasbeencleared.ETsarearelativelynovelstrategyofhostdefenseinvolvingexpulsionofnuclearmaterialandembeddedproteinsfromimmunecellstoimmobilizeandkillbacteria,fungi,andviruses.AsresearchonETsexpands,ithasbeguntoencompassmanyimmunecelltypesinunexpectedways,includingvarioustypesofMΦ,whicharenotonlycapableofgeneratingMETsinresponsetovariousstimuli,butrecentpreclinicaldatasuggestthattheyareanimportantagentinclearingETsandlimitingET‐mediatedinflammationandtissuedamage.ThisreviewaimstosummarizehistoricalandrecentfindingsofbiologicresearchregardingETformationandfunctionanddiscusstheroleofMΦinETphysiologyandassociatedpathologies...
