Theskinharborsacomplexanduniqueimmunesystemthatprotectsagainstvariouspathologies,suchasinfectionandcancer.Althoughmanyofthemechanismsofimmuneactivationintheskinhavebeeninvestigated,itislikewiseimportanttouncovertheimmune‐regulatorycomponentsthatlimiteffectiveimmunityorpreventautoimmunity.Severalcellpopulationsareinvolvedinthisimmune‐regulatoryfunction,includingCD4+TcellsthatcoexpressthetranscriptionfactorFoxp3,knownasTregs,andcellswithimmune‐regulatoryfunctionknownasmyeloid‐derivedsuppressorcells(MDSCs).Thisreviewfocusesontherolethatimmune‐regulatorycells,suchasMDSCsandTregs,playincutaneouspathology,suchasmalignancy,psoriasis,dermatitis,burnwounds,andtransplantation.Althoughtheirdepletionmayservetoaugmentimmunity,expansionofthesecellsmaybeusedtosuppressexcessiveimmunereactions.Thesecellsareattractive,therapeutictargetsforvariousconditionsandthus,deservefurtherexploration...
