Inbacterialmeningitis,neutrophilscopewithbacterialinfectionbutalsoleadtotissuedamage.ThebalanceofbeneficialandharmfuleffectsmaydependonthelifespanoftheneutrophilsintheCNS.Here,weshowthatCSFofpatientswithmeningococcalmeningitiscontainsaneutrophilapoptosis‐inhibitingcapacitythatcorrelateswithTNF‐αcontent.InvitroexperimentsshowthatNeisseriameningitidisaswellasLPSderivedfromthesebacteriaregulatedneutrophilapoptosismainlybystimulatingTNF‐αproductioninmonocytes.WhereasLPS‐inducedPI3K‐dependentsurvivalsignalsinmonocytesarecriticalforneutrophilsurvival,PI3Ksignalingingranulocytesdidnotcontributetotheincreasedlifespanofneutrophils.WeconcludethatLPS‐drivenPI3Ksignalinginmonocytesregulatesneutrophilapoptosisandthereby,maybecrucialintheinitiationofsecondarybraindamageinbacterialmeningitis...
