Inflammationplaysanimportantroleinthepathogenesisofischemicstrokeandotherformsofischemicbraininjury.Experimentallyandclinically,thebrainrespondstoischemicinjurywithanacuteandprolongedinflammatoryprocess,characterizedbyrapidactivationofresidentcells(mainlymicroglia),productionofproinflammatorymediators,andinfiltrationofvarioustypesofinflammatorycells(includingneutrophils,differentsubtypesofTcells,monocyte/macrophages,andothercells)intotheischemicbraintissue.Thesecellulareventscollaborativelycontributetoischemicbraininjury.Despiteintenseinvestigation,therearestillnumerouscontroversiesconcerningthetimecourseoftherecruitmentofinflammatorycellsinthebrainandtheirpathogenicrolesinischemicbraininjury.Inthisreview,weprovideanoverviewofthetime‐dependentrecruitmentofdifferentinflammatorycellsfollowingfocalcerebralI/R.Wediscusshowthesecellscontributetoischemicbraininjuryandhighlightcertainrecentfindingsandcurrentlyunansweredquestionsaboutinflammatorycellsinthepathophysiologyofischemicstroke...
