Leukocytesaremajorcellulareffectorsoftheimmuneresponse.Toaccomplishthistask,thesecellsdisplayavastarsenalofproteinases,amongwhich,membersoftheMMPfamilyareespeciallyimportant.LeukocytesexpressseveralmembersoftheMMPfamily,includingsecreted‐andmembrane‐anchoredMT‐MMPs,whichsynergisticallyorchestrateanappropriateproteolyticreactionthatultimatelymodulatesimmunologicalresponses.TheMT‐MMPsubfamilycomprisesTM‐andGPI‐anchoredproteinases,whicharetargetedtowell‐definedmembranemicrodomainsandexhibitdifferentsubstratespecificities.WhereasmuchinformationexistsonthebiologicalrolesofsecretedMMPsinleukocytes,therolesofMT‐MMPsremainrelativelyobscure.ThisreviewsummarizesthecurrentknowledgeontheexpressionofMT‐MMPsinleukocyteandtheircontributiontotheimmuneresponsesandtopathologicalconditions...
