Lipid‐richorganellesarecommoninmanycelltypes.Incells,suchasadipocytes,theseorganellesaretermedLDs,whereasinothercells,suchasleukocytes,theyarecalledLBs.ThestudyofleukocyteLBshasattractedattentionasaresultoftheirassociationwithhumandiseases.Inleukocytes,suchaseosinophils,LBaccumulationhasbeendocumentedextensivelyduringinflammatoryconditions.Inthesecells,LBsarelinkedtotheregulationofimmuneresponsesbycompartmentalizationofseveralproteinsandlipidsinvolvedinthecontrolandbiosynthesisofinflammatorymediators(eicosanoids).However,ithasbeenunclearhowdiverseproteins,includingmembrane‐associatedenzymesinvolvedineicosanoidformation,incorporateintoLBs,especiallyiftheinternalcontentofLBsisassumedtoconsistsolelyofstoresofneutrallipids,aspresentwithinadipocyteLDs.Studiesoftheformation,function,andultrastructureofLBsineosinophilshavebeenprovidinginsightspertinenttoLBsinotherleukocytes.Here,wereviewcurrentknowledgeofthecompositionandfunctionofleukocyteLBsasprovidedbystudiesofhumaneosinophilLBs,includingrecognitionsoftheinternalarchitectureofeosinophilLBsbasedon3Delectrontomographicanalyses...
