Fetalalcoholspectrumdisorder(FASD),whichresultsfromethanolexposureduringpregnancy,andalcoholusedisorder(AUD),whichincludesbothbingeandchronicalcoholabuse,arestrikinglycommonandcostlyatpersonalandsocietallevels.Thesedisordersareassociatedwithsignificantpathology,includingthatobservedintheCNS.ItisnowappreciatedinbothhumansandanimalmodelsthatethanolcaninduceinflammationintheCNS.NeuroinflammationishypothesizedtocontributetotheneuropathologicandbehavioralconsequencesinFASDandAUD.Inthisreview,we:1)summarizetheevidenceofalcohol‐inducedCNSinflammation,2)outlinecellularandmolecularmechanismsthatmayunderliealcoholinductionofCNSinflammation,and3)discussthepotentialofnuclearreceptoragonistsforpreventionortreatmentofneuropathologiesassociatedwithFASDandAUD...
