【 摘 要 】
This study aimed at evaluating the effects of indiscriminate dumping of waste into Paiko River by analysing the physical and chemical parameters of water samples taken at four different points along the river. Chi square technique was used to analyse the data obtained. Findings show that after the control point Temperature, pH, Total dissolved solids, Total suspended solids and Turbidity increases in the water. Also, Oil and Grease and Total Hardness in the water increases from the third to last sample point. The Electrical Conductivity of the water was inconsistent for the four sample points. The Chloride content of the water decreases from the first to the fourth sample; Dissolved oxygen and Biological oxygen demand decreases but with an increase at the last sample point. Using Chi-square technique to ascertain differences in sample points results, findings revealed that significant difference exits in values of electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids and alkalinity whereas the differences in the other parameters were not significant. The findings of this study depict that the stream water is not safe for human consumption as it goes in variance with the W.H.O. standards. Generally it was observed that anthropogenic activities lowered the quality of water in Paiko stream most especially within the catchment of the town.
