【 摘 要 】

Foundation:Refractive disorders are common in the general population. Clinical evidence suggests that refractive errors are common in children, either as a single disorder or accompanied by amblyopia or strabismus. Objective:To determine the behavior of refractive defects in elementary school students. Methods:This is a descriptive study conducted from September 2015 to April 2016, which included all students from first to fourth grade belonging to Ignacio Agramonte y Loynaz elementary school in Cienfuegos. The following variables were analyzed: age, sex, and school grade, history of diagnosed refractive defects, visual acuity, present refractive defects, and optical prescriptions to correct diagnosed refractive defects. The data were obtained by conducting a thorough questioning of the patients, based on the personal and family pathological antecedents, followed by a complete ophthalmologic examination. Results:the group of age of 5 to 6 years and the masculine sex predominated. 48, 7% presented visual acuity smaller than 1.0; the most frequent refractive error was simple hypermetropic astigmatism (41, 3%). It was indicated the permanent use of glasses to the 46.3% of students. Conclusion:The number of children in elementary level with refractive defects which obstruct their visual acuity is not low, hence the importance of detecting them and establishing the necessary corrections.
