【 摘 要 】

The first equestrian bronze monument erected in Norway is dedicated to King Karl Johan of Sweden and Norway, created by Brynjulf Bergslien (1875). How did this come about, instead of the proposed monument to the nation’s constitution of 1814? The analysis of the extensive public debates, the committees in charge and the competitions reveal surprising insights into dominating, but also changing political, cultural, Scandinavist and nationalist thoughts at the time.
