【 摘 要 】

The Reformation played a crucial role in establishing the vernaculars as written languages in place of Latin. However, in Norway Danish became the language of the church, and the Reformation has often been blamed for the loss of Norwegian as a written language. This has been part of a motif of decline during the late Middle Ages, culminating with the loss of independence, the Reformation and the shift to Danish. Nonetheless, this historical account cannot be maintained, and the present paper rather explains the language shift as a consequence of more general political and cultural circumstances, and shows how Danish had become the main written language in Norway already before the Reformation was enforced.
