【 摘 要 】
This article discusses a registry of letters written by Isaac Olsen, who was a teacher among the Sami people in Finnmark, Northern Norway, during the period 1703–1716. In addition to the registry, complementary documents are used to create a picture of Olsen’s work prior to the official mission among the Sami people in Finnmark, which was led by Thomas von Westen. The article is based on original primary sources from the Museum of Cultural History in Oslo and The Royal Library in Copenhagen. The historical sources are collected and transcribed by the authors of this article. The article uncovers the contrast between Olsen’s aim and the pre-Christian religious practice among the Sami. This results on the part of Isaac Olsen in a fear and a conviction that the traditional Sami religious ideas have to be extinguished in order to promote the sake of the Christian mission.
