【 摘 要 】
Transnational social movements organizations (TSMOs) have grown at a remarkable rate since the 1950s, which has given protest politics a decidedly international character. In the 1990s, TSMOs shifted their strategy to focus more on mass mobilization. The success of these efforts remains unclear, however, as scholars have yet to examine whether TSMO connections are associated with increased protest participation. The uncertainty is compounded by work that suggests linkages between TSMO activity and mass mobilization could be an artifact of other factors. This study addresses the gap by merging data on TSMO memberships with data on individual protest participation to examine the existence of such a relationship. The merged data set contains information on 32,580 individuals in 35 countries. Results from a multivariate analysis that controls for several possible sources of spuriousness indicate that the number of TSMO memberships in a country is associated with individual protest activities. The results are similar in both high- and middle-income countries. The findings suggest that TSMOs have been successful at accomplishing one of their primary organizational objectives.
