【 摘 要 】

The purpose of this research is to study the mining impacts of the Minas-Rio project on rural communities in the municipalities of Alvorada de Minas, Conceicao do Mato Dentro and Dom Joaquim, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil.The focus of this study will be on understanding the situation of the communities under study, revealing what is behind the mining activity in that region and other mining projects in Brazil, in order to present a counterpoint to the way this sector is addressed in the engineering education. The methodology consists of qualitative research, with both, the semi-structured interviews and the observation, the main methods used. Several problems were identified, in the field, related to mining that the rural communities are facing. It’s evident the urgency of the engineering education, in order to graduate engineers committed with ethical and social values that society demands to face the problems arising from the pursuit of progress, economic growth and financial accumulation.
