【 摘 要 】

Unilateral chewing has been reported as a common and frequent form of mastication in individuals, its etiology has been referred to both central factors such as cerebral hemispheric dominance as well as local factors, including occlusal characteristics, loss of teeth, dental pain use of prosthesis, habits, etc. There is no consensus as to its cause; however its effects have been reported at the temporomandibular joint level in both painful symptoms and signs of joint noise and disc displacement. Chewing plays an important role in the development of dental arches so it is important to be bilaterally. Several methods have been used for the diagnosis of unilateral mastication, patient interrogation, electromyographic studies, observation of the bolus and functional masticatory angle. The objective of this literature review is to provide knowledge about the possible causes, effects of unilateral mastication and elements used in its diagnosis. For the accomplishment of this work, specialized electronic journals and the database of the National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health of the United States were consulted.
