Immunitytopreviouslyencounteredvirusescanalterresponsestounrelatedpathogens.Thisphenomenon,whichisknownasheterologousimmunity,hasbeenwellestablishedinanimalmodelsystems.Heterologousimmunityappearstoberelativelycommonandmaybebeneficialbyboostingprotectiveresponses.However,heterologousreactivitycanalsoresultinsevereimmunopathology.ThekeyfeaturesthatdefineheterologousimmunemodulationincludealterationsintheCD4+andCD8+Tcellcompartmentsandchangesinviraldynamicsanddiseaseprogression.Inthisreview,wediscussrecentadvancesandthecurrentunderstandingofantiviralimmunityinheterologousinfections.Thedifficultiesofstudyingthesecomplexheterologousinfectionsinhumansarediscussed,withspecialreferencetothevariationsinHLAhaplotypesanduncertaintiesaboutindividualsˈinfectionhistory.Despitetheselimitations,epidemiologicalanalysesinhumansandthedatafrommousemodelsofcoinfectioncanbeappliedtowardadvancingthedesignoftherapeuticsandvaccinationstrategies...
