Historically,onceacellbecameinfected,itwasconsideredtobebeyondallhelp.Bythisstage,theinvadingpathogenhadbreachedtheinnatedefensesandwasbeyondthereachofthehumoralarmoftheadaptiveimmuneresponse.Thepathogencouldstillberemovedbycell‐mediatedimmunity(e.g.,byNKcellsorcytotoxicTlymphocytes),butthesemechanismsnecessitatedthedestructionoftheinfectedcell.However,inrecentyears,ithasbecomeincreasinglyclearthatmanycellspossesssensorandeffectormechanismsfordealingwithintracellularpathogens.Mostofthesemechanismsarenotrestrictedtoprofessionalimmunecellsnordotheyallnecessitatethedestructionofthehost.Inthisreview,weexaminethestrategiesthatcellsusetodetectanddestroypathogensoncethecellmembranehasbeenpenetrated...
