Accumulatinglinesofevidencenowdemonstratethatneutrophilscanparticipateinadaptiveimmuneresponsesdirectlyorindirectly.EvenmorestrikingistheirpotentialtoacquirephenotypicandfunctionalpropertiesthataretypicallyreservedforprofessionalAPCs.Thesenewlyemergingconceptsofneutrophilheterogeneityandplasticitynowchallengetheclassicviewofneutrophilsasterminallydifferentiatedleukocytesfullycommittedtophagocytefunctionality.Here,wepresentabriefoverviewofourcurrentunderstandingofneutrophilplasticitybyfocusingontheacquisitionofDC‐likepropertiesincultureandatsitesofinflammation.HumanandmurineneutrophilsacquiresurfaceexpressionofMHCII,costimulatorymolecules,andothersurfacemarkersofDCswhenculturedinthepresenceofselectedcytokines.TheresultingpopulationsalsoexhibitpotentAPCactivitiestopresentvariousantigenstoTcells.“Unusual”neutrophilsexpressingDCmarkershavebeendetectedininflammatorylesionsinhumanpatientsandmousediseasemodels.ThesefindingsimplythatacquisitionofDC‐likepropertiesbyneutrophilsatthesitesofinflammationmayrepresentakeyprocessforlinkingtheinnateandadaptivearmsofimmuneresponses...
