Monocytesandmacrophagesdifferentiatefromprogenitorcellsundertheinfluenceofcolony‐stimulatingfactors.Genome‐scaledatahaveenabledtheidentificationofthesetofgenesthatdistinguishesmacrophagesfromothercelltypesandthewaysinwhichthousandsofgenesareregulatedinresponsetopathogenchallenge.Althoughtherehasbeenafocusonasmallsubsetoflineage‐enrichedtranscriptionfactors,suchasPU.1,morethanone‐halfofthetranscriptionfactorsinthegenomecanbeexpressedinmacrophagelineagecellsundersomestateofactivation,andtheyinteractinacomplexnetwork.Thenetworkarchitectureisconservedacrossspecies,butmanyofthetargetgenesevolverapidlyanddifferbetweenmouseandhuman.Thedataandpublicationdelugerelatedtomacrophagebiologyrequirethedevelopmentofnewanalyticaltoolsandwaysofpresentinginformationinanaccessibleform.Thewebsitewww.macrophages.comisacommunitywebsitethatpartlyfillsthisniche...
