ArtiodactylspossessGALTthatappearsinfetallifeandislocatedattheextremeendoftheileum.TheseIPPcontainmostlyBcellsandinvoluteearlyinpostnatallife.Rabbitshaveasimilarlylocatedlymphoidorgan,calledthesacculusrotundus.StudiesinsheepandrabbitshaveledtotheconceptthatthelowerhindgutGALTrepresentsprimarylymphoidtissueforBcellsandisnecessaryfornormalBcelldevelopment,analogoustothebursaofFabricius.ThisreviewtracesthehistoryoftheobservationsandtheoriesthathaveledtotheexistingconceptconcerningtheroleoflowerGALT.WethenreviewrecentdatafrompigletswithresectedIPPthatchallengestheconceptthattheIPPisprimaryBcelllymphoidtissueandthatartiodactylsandrabbitsaremembersoftheGALTgroupinthesamecontextasgallinaceousbirds.EliminatingtheIPPastheprimarylymphoidtissueforBcellsleadstothehypothesisthattheIPPactsasfirst‐respondermucosallymphoidtissue...
